At the center of the ancient region of Tuscia, Vierbo is the northernmost of the Lazio provinces. Located about 100 Km from Rome and just over 200 Km from Florence, the town is placed at the foot of the Cimini mountains, surrounded by the lakes Vico and Bolsena, at short distance from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its size and location have contributed to preserve the city’s typical medieval Italian character, now enriched by modern service.
The relevance of the town started between the 11 th and 12 th century when it became commune and increase its prestige. During the 13 th century the town was enriched by palaces, churches, fountains and the city wall were erected. So Viterbo became one of the most important religious and economic center in Italy.
In the second half of the 13 th century, Viterbo became the regular seat of the Popes and of pontifical court. Between 1255 and 1266 the Papal Palace was built on Colle del Duomo (Hill of the Cathedral) close to the Romanesque Cathedral of Saint Lawrence (12 th century).
The Papal Palace is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful buildings of Viterbo with its beautiful loggia (also called Benediction loggia), from which the pope came out at the end of the conclave.
The town preserves its medieval structure: by walking through the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino is like stepping back in time, with the streets of perfectly placed little stones.
Viterbo is also famous for its thermal baths. There are many equipped spas, as well as natural pools.
